WHO defines "self-care as the ability of individuals, families and communities to promote their own health, prevent disease, maintain health, and to cope with illness with or without the support of a health or care worker.
It recognizes individuals as active agents in managing their own health care in areas including health promotion; disease prevention and control; self-management; providing care to dependent persons; and rehabilitation, including palliative care. It does not replace the health care system, but instead provides additional choices and options for healthcare" (World Health Organization, 2024). 💝
I feel that self-care is often confused with self-indulgence. Self-Care is actually essential to everyone's wellbeing, not just our own, but especially if we wish to look after someone else. We need to first take care of ourselves! 😃
Self-Care can be really small things like having a moment to enjoy a cup of your favourite drink, going for a walk, calling a friend for a catch up etc! Just being kind to ourselves as if we were caring after someone close to us 💖
September is Self-Care awareness month, what do you usually do for Self-Care? Is there anything else you'd like to try and add? I love Action for Happiness' Calendar to use for a reminder. It's like a year-round advent calendar! 🤩
Enjoy your Self-Care routine. Celebrate everyday. Self-Care is self-empowering 😉
